User Review - Lyostat2

Earlier this year a Lyostat2 freeze drying microscope system was installed at leading bioscience company CHR Hansen. Brian Grant from the Cultures & Enzymes Division reports on his experience of the system:

"The Lyostat 2 Freeze Drying Microscope has allowed CHR Hansen to visually identify the collapse point temperature of our most difficult to freeze dry products. Armed with this information, we are able to identify reformulations with higher collapse point temperatures. This eliminates extra work evaluating reformulations in actual freeze drying experiments. The process of evaluating samples is extremely simple and intuitive. The results are captured in a movie format which is easy to use and explain in presentations to non-technical colleagues. In my opinion, this piece of equipment only strengthens the adage 'A picture is worth a thousand words'.

"Within the dairy industry, Chr Hansen Inc. has a long history and a strong market position. We are world leaders in the development and production of bacteria cultures and enzymes used in dairy. We are also expanding in the human health area of probiotics. As you may be aware, the human health area utilizes delivery systems requiring culture stability at room temperature for extended periods.

"The Lyostat2 has been useful in developing preservation systems (i.e. cryoprotectants) which allow for optimal freeze drying of cultures and extended stability. Specifically, we have been able to visually see the collapse of the frozen ice crystal structure in our formulations. While there are other methods of determining the collapse point of formulations, it was reaffirming to see it visually.

"The system has been reliable and easy to use. Biopharma does a great job of installation and training. I would recommend purchasing at least two days of set up and training if you decide to buy the Lyostat2."
