The Benefits of Networking

BTL’s participation in biotech and pharmaceutical networking events in 2010 – by Business Development Executive Dora Halmi

Since I have joined Biopharma Technology in January 2010 I have had the opportunity to enjoy a number of great pharmaceutical and biotech events. One of the first of these was the London Regenerative Medicine Conference on 16th Feb in London, hosted by Stephen Minger King’s College London and Prof. Chris Mason, UCL, who have founded the event in 2005. At the Launch of Biosciences conference in London 30th March we made great contacts within the Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN) teams, who have since been very helpful with helping us finding partners projects involving freeze drying technology.

On 10th March, my colleagues Karen Carty, Peter Williams, Marc Townell and I made our way to Nottingham for the Special Interest Group of one of the UK’s most well-known pharmaceutical organisations, Novozyme. The KTN and Novozyme teams organised an efficient and high quality day of interesting presentations, site tour of the production site, lunch and plenty of networking opportunities including speed networking.

BTL has been active in searching for collaborators, which has resulted in 5 grant projects this year to date, and more pending approval. For this purpose business partner Dirk Gewert and I attended the March TSB conference in London, which was another well organised event by the KTNs. The individual group discussions focused on finding the right collaborators within SMEs, industries and academia, which gave us the opportunity to find one of the partners we are currently collaborating on.

On 24th April the European TSB conference in London featured a whole day of great presentations by: Stephen Hogan at European Commission on Opportunities for Life Sciences Businesses; Genevra Kirby at Innovation and Skills on UK Funding Success in Framework programmes, Graham Mobbs at Eurostar National Contact Point on Collaborative Funding programmes; Graham Hughes on NCP’s role, Peter Reid on EEN’s role and Lorraine Vanzie on UKTI’s role. There have also been group discussions focused on the different topics such as writing the framework proposal; NCP – Health Theme, and Biotechnology priorities.

Even though we have a very niche market, Biopharma’s success in the industry comes across at these events and I am delighted to obtain positive feedback of our high level of knowledge, not only from our current and former customers but from companies who are looking into the lyophilisation technology as well. These events have been giving us an extremely valuable experience and great opportunity to meet people in the field of laboratory, life science and biotechnology, with potential interest in lyophilisation and find a common ground or even solutions for each other’s projects, in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

Biopharma have now become a member of ERBI and OBN therefore we are very excited about participating in their future events, in particular Bio Tuesdays and Bio Wednesdays, and looking forward to finding people with innovative projects in the industry exploring methods and solutions using lyophilisation techniques.
