Installation at the University of Iowa

This quarter saw more installations of the BTL Lyostat2 freeze-drying microscope with Thomas Peacock travelling to Cambridge, Boston and San Diego to carry out installations and user training. The University of Iowa also purchased a Lyostat2 and Lyotherm2 and Marc Townell went out to perform a double installation at the College of Pharmaceuticals.

The University of Iowa is a major public research institution dedicated to promoting research development by maintaining state of the art facilities. The University of Iowa Pharmaceuticals (UIP) college maintains one of the largest and most experienced pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities in the United States and already boasts significant in-house expertise in lyophilisation. The addition of the Lyostat2 and Lyotherm2 will give the students the ability to determine a variety of critical temperatures, which will give them accurate information about their formulations and a rational starting point for cycle designs.

After the machines were assembled and tested Marc gave a presentation on critical temperatures to students and staff at UIP to commence the instrument training. Afterwards students and staff were trained on the methodology of using Lyostat2 and Lyotherm2, how to interpret and apply the results, as well as providing them with an understanding of how the instruments are constructed. The three days of training and installation ended with a hints on troubleshooting and a Q&A session.

You can read more about the UIP’s work on their website here.
