BTL at the BPC

This September Biopharma Technology attended the British Pharmaceutical Conference in Manchester.

The BPC is organised by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB), the professional body for pharmacists and the regulatory body for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in England, Scotland and Wales. With a range of speakers, sessions, exhibitors and presentation of original research in the field of pharmaceuticals, this conference aimed to look at how pharmacists are developing new ways of working.

Whilst at this conference Senior Scientist Isobel Cook presented a talk at the ‘Short Papers in Pharmaceutical Analysis’ session. The oral presentation is titled ‘A study of vial headspace moisture in an entire freeze dried batch and the factors affecting moisture content variability’. This talk introduced headspace moisture analysis in contrast with the more commonly known and understood Karl Fischer moisture analysis. Headspace moisture analysis has enabled Biopharma to map the sample moisture for an entire shelf of freeze dried vials. Analysis of the range of moisture values obtained yields information which can improve our understanding of the processes and materials involved, and the affect they can have on the final product moisture.

In addition to this Isobel also be presented a poster titled ‘The use of impedance analysis for the study of critical events in the frozen state, for formulation and lyo-cycle development’. This poster summarises BTL’s ongoing research on impedance analysis and how this was used to study critical events in the frozen state. The data gained from these studies can then be used to enable more successful freeze drying formulation and cycle development. This paper can be downloaded here.

The abstracts for both presentations are published in the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, Science proceedings 2009.
